Quick answer: what is the UK Graduate visa?
The Graduate visa lets international students who have completed an eligible UK degree stay and work without a sponsor. You must apply from inside the UK before your Student visa expires, once your university has reported that you passed. It lasts 2 years for applications made by 31 December 2026, 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027, and 3 years for PhD graduates. It cannot be extended, so you need to switch to another route, such as Skilled Worker, before it ends.

Who qualifies for the Graduate route
The Graduate route rewards a course you have already finished, so the Home Office looks backwards at your studies rather than forwards at a job. Five points decide most cases.
- Current permission: you are physically in the UK and hold a Student or Tier 4 (General) visa that has not yet expired.
- Eligible qualification: a UK bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree, or another listed course such as a law conversion, legal practice or bar course, or a PGCE.
- Time studied here: at least 12 months in the UK on a course longer than 12 months, or the whole course if it was shorter.
- Your provider: a licensed student sponsor with a track record of compliance, which has told the Home Office you passed.
- Sponsor consent: written agreement from a government or official sponsor that paid both your fees and living costs in the last 12 months.
You cannot hold the Graduate route twice, and people who have already been on the Doctorate Extension Scheme are not eligible. There is no separate English test and no requirement to show savings. Source: GOV.UK: the course you studied.
Timing: the window between results and expiry
The most stressful part of the Graduate route is the short window in which a valid application can be made. It opens on the day your university reports successful completion and closes on the day your Student permission ends. Universities usually report in batches after exam boards, so a late resit or a delayed dissertation mark can squeeze the window to a few days.
- Ask your international office when it will report your completion, and get the confirmation in writing.
- Check the exact end date on your eVisa, not the date you remember from your first visa.
- Apply on or before 31 December 2026 if you can, because that secures a 2-year grant rather than 18 months.
- Stay in the Common Travel Area while you wait, because leaving can withdraw an application made inside the UK.
Graduation ceremonies and certificates do not matter for the Graduate route. What matters is the report to the Home Office and the date on your current permission.
Work, business and study on a Graduate visa
Graduate permission is unusually flexible. You can work for any employer at any skill level, change jobs as often as you like, work part time, freelance, run your own business or volunteer. No employer needs a sponsor licence to hire you, which makes this the time to show a future sponsor what you can do.
There are limits. You cannot work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach, you cannot claim most public funds, and you cannot use the route to start another course that would need a Student sponsor. Many graduates use these months to build experience in the occupation they will later be sponsored in.
An accountant’s view of freelancing on the Graduate route
Plenty of graduates in Bedford and Luton deliver food, tutor or take freelance design and IT work alongside a job search. Basharat, who is also an accountant, helps you keep that income in order so it does not cause problems later:
- Registering for Self Assessment when your freelance income needs it
- Keeping invoices and bank records that match what you declare
- Separating business and personal spending from day one
- Showing a clean tax record if you later apply for a business route
Partners and children on the Graduate route
The family rules here are narrower than many graduates expect. Only people who already hold permission as your dependants on your Student visa can carry on with you. That can include a husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried partner, and children under 18. A baby born in the UK while you are a student or a graduate can also be added, using a full birth certificate showing both parents.
Someone who is not already in your family group cannot join you from overseas on the Graduate route. If you marry abroad during these months, your new spouse usually has to wait until you hold permission on a route that accepts new dependants, such as Skilled Worker. Each family member pays their own application fee and health surcharge. Source: GOV.UK: your partner and children.
Planning your next visa before the clock runs out
Because there is no extension, the real task is to leave the Graduate route on time and on the right footing. We usually start planning about six months before your permission ends.
- Skilled Worker: recent Graduate visa holders can be treated as new entrants, so an employer may pay 70% of the going rate, subject to a floor of £33,400, for a limited period. See our Skilled Worker visa guide.
- Other work routes: Global Talent and Health and Care roles are compared on our work visa page.
- Your own business: an endorsed idea may suit the Innovator Founder route on our business visa page.
- Family life: if your partner is British or settled, the spouse visa may be the better next step.
Graduate months do not count towards the 5 years needed for Skilled Worker settlement, so the earlier you switch, the earlier your settlement clock starts. The new entrant salary rules are on GOV.UK: when you can be paid less.
What the Graduate route costs
| Cost | Amount (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Home Office application fee | £937 for you and for each dependant |
| Health surcharge, 2-year grant | £2,070 per person |
| Health surcharge, PhD 3-year grant | £3,105 per person |
| Health surcharge, 18-month grant | Charged at £1,035 a year, pro rata, for applications from 1 January 2027 |
Fees change regularly, so confirm them on the Home Office fees table and the health surcharge calculator before paying.
Mistakes that cost graduates their visa
- Waiting for a certificate and applying a day after the Student visa ended
- Applying before the university reported completion, which makes the application invalid
- Counting distance learning time abroad towards the 12-month UK study period
- Forgetting that a scholarship body must consent in writing
- Assuming a spouse overseas can join during the Graduate period
- Leaving the switch to a sponsored job until the final month
If a Graduate application is refused, we explain the reasons and whether an administrative review fits. Where a case needs a court challenge, we will tell you and refer you to a solicitor or barrister.
