Quick answer: which UK business visa do I need?

If you want to start your own new business in the UK, the main route is the Innovator Founder visa. It needs an endorsement from an approved body, English at level B2 and £1,270 in savings, and it can lead to settlement after 3 years. If an established overseas company wants to send a senior employee to open its first UK office, the UK Expansion Worker visa is the usual route. Short business trips for meetings only need a visit visa or ETA.

Innovator Founder visa: starting a new business

The Innovator Founder visa is for people with an original business idea that they will actively run in the UK. You can work for your own business and, in some cases, take other skilled work, but the business must be your main focus. There is no set minimum investment; instead the endorsing body judges whether your plan is realistic and properly funded.

An endorsing body tests your idea against three criteria:

  • Innovative: a genuinely new idea, not a copy of something already on the UK market.
  • Viable: you have, or are actively building, the skills, knowledge and market awareness to run it.
  • Scalable: clear potential to create jobs and grow into national or international markets.

Once endorsed, you apply to the Home Office within 3 months of the endorsement letter. You will then have regular contact point meetings with your endorsing body, and they will need to confirm your progress before you can settle. Source: GOV.UK list of endorsing bodies.

Switching from a Student or Graduate visa

Many founders in Bedford and nearby university towns first came to the UK to study. Since 25 November 2025, Student and Graduate visa holders can switch to the Innovator Founder visa without leaving the UK. This lets graduates turn a business they started during their studies into a long-term route. You still need a fresh endorsement and must meet every requirement on the date you apply.

Why an accountant should check your business plan

Endorsing bodies reject plans whose numbers do not hold together. Basharat, who is also a qualified accountant, reviews the financial side the way an assessor does:

  • 3-year revenue and cash-flow forecasts that match your market research
  • Start-up costs, funding sources and evidence of where money comes from
  • Company structure, shareholdings and Companies House records
  • Accounts and tax position for an existing overseas company

UK Expansion Worker: opening a UK branch

The UK Expansion Worker visa is one of the Global Business Mobility routes. It lets an established overseas business send a senior manager or specialist to set up its first presence in the UK. The overseas business must be trading, and the UK entity must have a sponsor licence. From 5 March 2026, the worker usually needs to have worked for the business outside the UK for at least 6 months, down from 12.

  • The overseas company is active and trading, with no existing UK branch or subsidiary
  • The UK entity has been registered and holds a sponsor licence
  • The role pays at least £52,500 or the going rate for the job
  • The worker is a senior manager or specialist, not general staff

The visa does not lead to settlement. Once the UK branch is trading, staff usually move to the Skilled Worker route, which our work visa page explains. Source: GOV.UK UK Expansion Worker visa.

Other ways to do business in the UK

  • Hiring overseas staff: a UK company needs a sponsor licence first. See our sponsor licence page.
  • Short business trips: meetings and conferences only need a visit visa or ETA. See our visit visa page.
  • Already in the UK: a spouse visa, indefinite leave to remain or British citizenship lets you run a business without a separate business visa.
  • Closed routes: the Start-up, Tier 1 Entrepreneur and Sole Representative visas are closed to new applicants. Existing holders may still be able to extend or settle.

Common reasons business applications fail

  • A business idea the endorsing body sees as ordinary rather than innovative
  • Forecasts that do not match the market research or funding available
  • Unclear source of funds for savings or investment
  • An overseas company that cannot show real, ongoing trading
  • Missing English evidence or savings not held for the full 28 days

We read any refusal or rejection letter with you and explain what can be fixed in a new application. Where a matter needs court action, we pass you to a solicitor or barrister.

Business visa questions

Thinking about starting or expanding a business in the UK? Call 01234 962804, Monday to Friday, or on Saturdays by appointment.

The Innovator Founder visa is the main route for people who want to set up and run a new business in the UK. Your business idea must be new, innovative and scalable, and an approved endorsing body has to endorse it before you apply.

Yes. Since 25 November 2025, people on a Student or Graduate visa can switch to the Innovator Founder visa from inside the UK, as long as they meet every requirement and have a valid endorsement.

There is no fixed minimum investment any more. The endorsing body decides whether you have enough funding to deliver your business plan. Separately, you need £1,270 in personal savings held for 28 days unless you have been in the UK for 12 months.

It is granted for 3 years. You can apply for indefinite leave to remain after 3 years if your endorsing body confirms your business has met the required milestones.

The UK Expansion Worker visa, part of Global Business Mobility, lets an established overseas business send a senior manager or specialist to set up its first UK presence. The worker must usually have worked for the business abroad for at least 6 months.

On the Innovator Founder and Global Business Mobility routes, your partner and children under 18 can usually apply as your dependants. Each pays their own visa fee and health surcharge and must show funds where required.

Some visas, such as a spouse visa or indefinite leave to remain, allow self-employment. Others, such as Skilled Worker and visitor visas, do not. Check your visa conditions before you register a company or take on clients.

Most problems start at endorsement: a business idea that is not genuinely new, weak market research, or financial forecasts that do not add up. A clear, well-evidenced business plan is the most important part of the application.
