Quick answer: how does a UK visit visa work?
A Standard Visitor visa lets someone come to the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, to see family or friends, or for business meetings. It costs £135 and most decisions take about 3 weeks. The visitor must show the trip is genuine, that they can pay for it (or that a UK sponsor will), and that they will leave at the end. Some nationalities need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) instead of a visa. Visitors cannot work or switch to another visa in the UK.

UK visitor visa at a glance
| Length of stay | Up to 6 months per visit |
|---|---|
| Home Office fee | £135 for up to 6 months; more for 2, 5 or 10-year visas |
| Typical decision time | About 3 weeks after biometrics, outside the UK |
| Allowed | Tourism, family visits, business meetings, short courses up to 6 months, private medical treatment |
| Not allowed | Paid work, living in the UK through frequent visits, or switching to another visa |
| ETA instead of a visa | For many visa-free nationalities, including EU and US citizens |

What the Home Office looks for in a visitor
Every visit visa decision comes down to one question: is this a genuine visit, and will the person go home afterwards? Caseworkers weigh the evidence as a whole, so a strong application tells a consistent story.
- Purpose: a clear reason for the trip, with dates that make sense, such as a wedding, a birth or a business meeting.
- Ties at home: a job, business, property, studies or close family the visitor will return to.
- Funds: enough money for the trip, either the visitor’s own or from a sponsor who can afford it.
- History: previous UK or international travel where the visitor followed the rules.
Inviting parents and family to visit you in the UK
Many of our Bedford clients want their parents to visit for a few weeks or months. The visitor makes the application, but as the sponsor you play a big part. Your documents show who they are staying with, why, and who is paying.
- An invitation letter with your relationship, the dates and where they will stay
- A copy of your passport, BRP, eVisa share code or British passport
- Your recent payslips and bank statements if you are paying for the trip
- Your tenancy or mortgage document, showing there is room for your guest
The visitor still needs evidence of their own ties at home. Strong sponsor documents cannot make up for a visitor who has nothing to return to. Source: GOV.UK visitor supporting documents guide.
Why an accountant checks visitor bank statements
A large deposit just before applying, known as funds parking, is one of the most common reasons for refusal. Basharat, who is also an accountant, reviews statements the way a caseworker does:
- Where any large or recent deposits came from, with evidence
- Whether the balance matches the visitor’s declared income
- Whether the sponsor can afford the trip alongside their own outgoings
- Business accounts and tax records for self-employed visitors
Business visitors
Business visitors can attend meetings, conferences and training, negotiate contracts and visit sites, but cannot take paid work or provide services directly to UK clients, with limited exceptions. A letter from the employer abroad and from the UK host company usually explains the purpose. If the trip involves real work, a work visa may be needed instead.
Long-term visit visas for regular visitors
Parents and grandparents who visit every year may benefit from a 2, 5 or 10-year visit visa. Each stay is still limited to 6 months, and the Home Office can cancel the visa if visits start to look like living in the UK. A good travel history and steady ties at home make a long-term visa more likely to be granted.
Marriage visitor visa
A Marriage Visitor visa lets a couple marry or register a civil partnership in the UK and then leave within 6 months. It is not for couples who want to live here afterwards; they need a spouse or fiancé visa instead. Source: GOV.UK Marriage Visitor visa.
Common reasons UK visit visas are refused
The Home Office (UK Visas and Immigration) refuses a visit visa when it is not satisfied that the visitor meets the requirements. Knowing the common reasons helps you prepare properly and avoid mistakes, whether you are applying for the first time or after a refusal.
1. Not enough evidence of your financial situation
You need to show you can afford the visit, including travel, accommodation and daily costs. If someone else is paying, explain this clearly and provide their evidence. Unexplained deposits, or documents that do not match your form, often raise concerns.
How to avoid this: Provide relevant bank statements, payslips, employment details or business records. If someone is sponsoring you, include their financial evidence and say exactly what they will pay for. There is no fixed bank balance that guarantees a visa; your finances should make sense for your circumstances and the cost of the trip.
2. Not showing that you intend to return home
You must show you will leave the UK at the end of your visit. Caseworkers look at your job, family responsibilities, business and other circumstances in your home country.
How to avoid this: Provide genuine evidence such as an employment letter, approved annual leave, business documents, proof of ongoing studies or family responsibilities. Limited ties at home do not automatically mean a refusal, but your evidence must support your plans to return.
3. An unclear reason for visiting the UK
Your application should explain why you are coming and how long you will stay, such as visiting family, attending a wedding, a holiday or a permitted business event.
How to avoid this: Explain the purpose of your visit, your travel dates and where you will stay. If you are visiting family or friends, an invitation letter and supporting documents help explain your plans.
4. Inconsistencies in your application
Even small mistakes can create doubt, for example an income on the form that does not match your bank statements, or travel plans that conflict with other documents.
How to avoid this: Check every detail before you submit. If there is a genuine mistake or discrepancy, explain it clearly rather than leaving the caseworker to make assumptions.
5. Concerns about your sponsor
If a family member or friend in the UK is paying for your visit or giving you a place to stay, the Home Office may check whether the arrangement is genuine and affordable. An invitation letter alone is often not enough.
How to avoid this: Show your relationship, where you will stay and who will pay for what, with documents that reflect the real arrangement. Having a sponsor does not guarantee approval.
6. Previous visa refusals or immigration problems
A past overstay, a breach of visa conditions or incorrect information in an earlier application can affect a new decision. A previous refusal does not automatically mean the next application will fail.
How to avoid this: Answer every immigration history question honestly. If you were refused before, understand the reasons and address them in your new application. Giving false information or failing to disclose it can lead to much more serious consequences, including a ban.
7. Staying in the UK too often or for too long
A visit visa is for temporary visits. It cannot be used to live in the UK through repeated or long stays. There is no fixed rule limiting every visitor to a set number of months a year; the Home Office looks at the overall pattern of your visits.
How to avoid this: Explain the reasons for your visits and show that your main home and life remain outside the UK. Your travel history should fit the purpose of a temporary visit.
8. Applying for the wrong visa
The Standard Visitor visa covers tourism, visiting family and friends and permitted business activities. It does not allow you to work in the UK or be self-employed here.
How to avoid this: If you really intend to work, run a business or do something not allowed for visitors, you need a different visa. Choosing the right route matters for this application and your future plans.
9. Missing or weak supporting documents
Your documents must support what you say in your application. If key information is missing, or documents contradict your form, the caseworker may not be satisfied.
How to avoid this: Submit relevant, clear and reliable evidence, such as financial records, employment evidence, accommodation details and an invitation letter. Documents not in English or Welsh need a certified translation. More documents is not always better.
What to do if your UK visit visa is refused
A refusal is disappointing, especially when you were planning to see family or attend an important event, but it does not mean you cannot apply again.
- Read your refusal letter carefully. It explains why the Home Office refused your visa. Understanding each concern is the first step.
- Address every reason for refusal. Work out what went wrong and what clearer explanation or extra evidence would answer it. Sending the same application again usually leads to the same result.
- Consider your options. Most visit visa refusals carry no right of appeal, so the usual route is a fresh, stronger application. In limited cases a decision can be challenged in court through judicial review. That is outside our IAA Level 1 authorisation, so if it is needed we refer you to a solicitor or barrister.
- Get your refusal letter reviewed. We read the refusal letter with you, check your documents, point out each weakness and help you prepare a fresh application.
