Quick answer: what do you need for a UK student visa?
To get a UK student visa you need an unconditional offer and a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed student sponsor, enough money for your course fees and living costs held for 28 days, and English at the required level. Outside London, including Bedford, living costs are £1,171 a month for up to 9 months. Most students cannot bring family members, and degree-level students can usually work 20 hours a week in term time.

Student visa requirements at a glance
| Offer and CAS | From a university, college or school with a student sponsor licence |
|---|---|
| Living costs (outside London) | £1,171 a month for up to 9 months, so up to £10,539 |
| Living costs (London) | £1,529 a month for up to 9 months, so up to £13,761 |
| Course fees | Unpaid first-year fees shown on your CAS |
| How long funds are held | 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of applying |
| English | B2 for degree level (often assessed by the university); B1 below degree level |
| When to apply | Up to 6 months before the course starts from outside the UK, 3 months from inside |

Proving your money: the 28-day rule
Most student visa refusals we see come down to money, not the course. The Home Office checks the balance on every day of the 28-day period, not just on the last day, and it must be in an account you can use. Source: GOV.UK student visa money.
- The balance never drops below the required amount on any day of the 28 days.
- The statement ends no more than 31 days before you apply.
- Money in a parent’s account needs their consent letter and your birth certificate.
- Loans and official financial sponsorship need letters in the exact format the rules ask for.
Why an accountant checks student funds
Basharat is also an accountant, so he reads bank statements the way a caseworker does. Before you apply he checks:
- The lowest daily balance across all 28 days, not just the closing figure
- Currency conversion at the rate the Home Office uses on the day you apply
- Large recent deposits and where they came from
- Deposits already paid to the university, so they are deducted correctly
English language and ATAS
Universities can usually assess your English themselves for degree-level courses, and they confirm it on your CAS. For courses below degree level you normally need an approved Secure English Language Test. Some science, engineering and technology courses at postgraduate level also need an ATAS certificate before you apply, which can take several weeks. Sources: GOV.UK English requirement and GOV.UK ATAS.
Family members and working while you study
Since January 2024, most students cannot bring a partner or children. The exceptions are postgraduate research students, such as PhD students, and government-sponsored students on courses longer than 6 months. While studying at degree level you can usually work up to 20 hours a week in term time and full time in official vacations, but you cannot be self-employed. Studying in and around Bedford
Students in our area attend the University of Bedfordshire’s Bedford campus, Cranfield University a short drive away, and further education colleges in the town. Bedford is also known for its independent schools, several of which take international boarders. Because Bedford is outside London, the lower monthly living cost figure applies to these courses, which makes a real difference to how much you need to show.
Child Student visa for independent schools
Children aged 4 to 17 can study at a fee-paying independent school on a Child Student visa. The school issues the CAS, and parents must show they can pay the fees and living costs. Children aged 16 or 17 can apply with a parent’s consent, and suitable care and travel arrangements must be in place for under-18s. Source: GOV.UK Child Student visa.
Short-term study for English courses
If you want to study English for 6 to 11 months, the short-term study route may suit you better. It does not need a CAS, but you cannot work, extend or bring family. Shorter courses of up to 6 months can usually be done as a visitor. Source: GOV.UK short-term study visa.
After your course: Graduate visa and beyond
When you finish a degree, you can usually stay on the Graduate visa and work without a sponsor, then move into a sponsored role through our work visa service. Source: GOV.UK Graduate visa.
